This piercing is near the edge of the lip, the most common placing being near the bottom lip line either centrally or offset to one side. Arrangements of pairs of Lip Piercings have different names such as Snake Bites. One of the most popular types of jewellery for this piercing is the flat backed stud (labret stud) which is comfortable against the inside of the mouth. Titanium, 316L surgical steel and Black PVD studs are popular but they can cause wear to the gums over a long period of time. Bio-plast studs are flexible and can be used instead as they cause less gum wear. Other popular choices for the lip piercing are Horseshoes and Rings. There is a large variety of screw-fit add-on's to use with the studs and horseshoes such as gem balls and cones, and clip-in add-on's for ball closure rings. Lip piercings can be either 1.2mm or 1.6mm gauge, the most common length for studs is 8mm and the most common size for lip rings is 10mm.
