A Helix piercing is on the cartilage on the outer edge of the ear between the middle and the top of the ear. The most popular type of jewellery for the Helix piercing is the flat backed stud (labret stud). The flat back of the stud reduces the chance of catching the jewellery on hair and clothes and is more comfortable for sleeping. It can have gem balls, cones and fancy tops to enhance the look of the piercing. Black, silver and anodised coloured titanium jewellery is available as well as 9ct gold and Surgical Steel. Other types of suitable jewellery are the ball closure ring with a plain or gem ball, the segment ring which is a smooth ring, the horseshoe. Jewellery for this piercing could be 1.2mm or 1.6mm gauge. Common stud lengths are 6mm and 8mm, and ring and horseshoe sizes are 10mm and 12mm (internal diameter).
